Showing Love Through Action

"To show by deed the love of Christ"

Mission and service have always been central to who we are at Harmony United Church. Whether supporting neighbours in Thunder Bay or contributing to communities around the world, we believe faith is expressed through action.

Our outreach is carried out through donations, fundraising events, partnerships with local organizations, and the generous participation of our congregation. Every gift of time, food, or money makes a difference.

On Sunday afternoons once a month, at 1:30, some volunteers from Harmony go to Roseview Manor Long-Term Care facility to lead worship services.

Our Local Outreach Partners

Harmony has long supported people in Thunder Bay through donations, practical assistance, and partnerships with organizations working on the front lines of community need. The following are among the local causes our congregation has supported in recent years.

Food Cupboard

Harmony's top local recipient. Our congregation has donated funds, wooden tables, and a large coat rack to support the food cupboard's move to Munro Street. Regular financial donations help ensure families, singles, and seniors have food through the week.

Thunder Pride

Fundraising and Fellowship

Our fundraising events are as much about community as they are about raising funds. Each year, congregation members, neighbours, and friends come together to support Harmony's outreach work — and to enjoy one another's company in the process.

Harvest for Hunger

Every year Harmony participates in the Harvest for Hunger food collection, gathering non-perishable donations for local food banks and community cupboards.

Hofland Farms Parking Lot Sale

Each autumn, Hofland Farms sets up in Harmony's parking lot, connecting the community with local produce and generously donating a portion back to the church.

Camp Duncan on Loon Lake

Camp Duncan: A Place of Community and Respite

For almost a century, United Church communities have camped on the shores of Loon Lake, 55 km east of Thunder Bay. Camp Duncan is the singular point of connection for the city's United Churches — and a place of rest and renewal for families, young people, and marginalized communities who rarely get a chance to reconnect with nature.

Harmony's Support in 2025

Harmony continues to donate to Camp Duncan each year in support of its operations and Cabin 5. In 2025 the camp completed important safety upgrades — including a new UV water treatment system, a propane line replacement, a new kitchen fire suppression system, and new insulation in several cabins. Camp Duncan also took part in a shoreline re-wilding project with the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority, planting over one hundred native plants along the lakeshore.

How You Can Help

Camp Duncan's board is calling on member churches to donate at least $500 per year to help cover unexpected maintenance and repair costs. If you are interested in joining the Camp Duncan board or volunteering, please get in touch. The board has vacancies and welcomes dedicated people from across the Thunder Bay United Church community.

A History of Global Outreach

Harmony's commitment to showing love through action has never been limited by geography. Over the years, our congregation has contributed to projects far beyond Thunder Bay — helping build a school in Rwanda, constructing homes in El Salvador, and funding a water harvesting tank for a School of Nursing in Tanzania.

Today, Harmony continues its global witness through Mission and Service giving to The United Church of Canada — contributing $3,000 in 2025. Mission and Service supports communities around the world through education, development, health, and humanitarian work.

"For I know the plans that I have for you,' says the Lord, 'plans for good and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.'"

Get Involved in Our Outreach

Harmony's outreach is made possible by the generosity and participation of our congregation and the wider community. There are many ways to support the work — whether through financial giving, volunteering at events, donating food or goods, or simply showing up.

Every act of generosity, large or small, is an expression of the love we are called to show. If you would like to learn where help is needed right now, we would love to hear from you.
